Overview

***Notice: Beginning April 1, 2020, all projects must be designed to meet the 2018 ICC suite of codes and the 2020 City of Boulder Energy Conservation Code.  A draft of the proposed energy code can be found here pdf.***

Boulder, CO adopts the following codes:

  • The International Building Code, 2018 edition, including appendix chapters I, J, and K. Boulder, CO Muni. Code § 10-5-2 (adopted with amendments).
  • The International Residential Code, 2018 edition, including appendix chapters D, E, F, H, J, K, P, Q, R, and S Boulder, CO Muni. Code § 10-5.5-2 (adopted with amendments).
  • The International Property Maintenance Code, 2018 edition, including appendix chapters A, B, and C. Boulder, CO Muni. Code § 10-2-2 (adopted with amendments).

Residential Building Code

Colorado has yet to adopt a statewide residential code. Local laws will control.See PLRB, Colorado Building Codes for more information on state level codes.

Boulder adopted the 2018 IRC, locally. Note that adoptions usually come with amendments. So, it is important to review those amendments in addition to the unamended model code.

Existing buildings, meaning buildings that were built in accordance to code at the time of construction, typically merit extra consideration in a current updated code.

Refer to Appendix J of the adopted 2018 IRC, and also to the applicable provisions of the amended 2012 IPMC in Chapter 10-2 of the city code.

Boulder adopted the 2018 IBC, locally. Note that adoptions usually come with amendments. So, it is important to review those amendments in addition to the unamended model code.
